Hypocrisy In The Genius Room
(2005)
Rob’s fifth album (and first self-produced) emerged as an antifolk protest manifesto in fauvist poetry. Harnessing inspiration he found in NYC antifolk and Boston power-pop, Rob cultivated four years of material into a timely expression of pop revolt, typifying the powers of the era as monkeys ignoring their typewriters. Cheerfully excoriating everything from fourth-ward politics to nearsighted slacktivism, the album types cultural imperialism as a dance craze, romanticized capitalism as a failed peasant wedding, and political leadership as ecumenical myth. Production on Hypocrisy began in a cabin in rural Maine and spanned from DC to St. Louis, featuring artists from DC, Virginia, New York, St. Louis and Denmark. Laboring with two mics and an Mbox, Rob pulled in every talent at hand to furnish the album one overdub at a time. The result was released in October 2005, the penultimate product of the indie musician in the basement with a vision and the naïve hope of being heard.
